Grand Haven Steel recently completed a trial of Tool-X in a grinding application. According to Robert Lovell, President & CEO of Grand Haven Steel, “So far I am very pleased with the results of our grinding test”. He reports, “We have been testing the water based Tool-X additive in our grinder for two weeks on our most difficult part. The material is heat treated 17-4 PH stainless steel. We were able to increase the parts per dress from 15 to 20 ( 33 % ) and reduce the cycle time from 64 seconds to 40 seconds ( 37 % ).
This decreased cycle time will cut their costs per part substantially, and the grinding wheels are also working more effectively and lasting longer.
This improvement in cycle times while grinding echos the results we have seen on CNC turning machines (see Case Study 104), where we reported extended tool life. In general, adding Tool-X allows the operator to improve performance, with trade-offs between faster feeds and speeds, improved surface finish, and extended tool life. We have reported faster cycle times in Swiss Screw Machines (Case Study 101) and in Horizontal Milling applications (Case Study 102).
